File Sharing: Its importance.

'...file sharing is the practice of making files available for other individuals to download. It can be as simple as sharing a file for general consumption via My WebSpace or enabling file sharing on your computer’s operating system so that you can access your home computer files at work.' (Read more at: http://www.cio.wisc.edu/security-filesharing.aspx). But the idea that comes up in most people's head as they hear the word 'file sharing' is that people can illegally download free stuff off the internet using a torrent program such as utorrent (Download link: http://www.utorrent.com/downloads). And they are right because with a quick Google search one can easily find pretty much anything online for free and with a couple of clicks be on their merry way to having a copy of the file onto their computer.

And even though that may be the way a vast majority of user's use such programs, file sharing programs should not be frowned upon as they are very useful in distributing legitimate files across the internet to help ease the burden of paying for servers for people to download files from. A good examples of this would be Ubuntu (Download link: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/alternative-downloads) which is a free Operating System that user can use on their computers. Another example of this would be the adult game Katawa Shoujo (Download link: http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/download.phpthat was created by various individuals on the internet which utilized file sharing in order to get their game out to the public faster.

  1. Hello Luke,

Your blog post about File Sharing is very interesting. Some of the ideas that you have discussed in this post are exciting to read about. I really like the links that you have provided for every application that you mention about in your post. You took a very unique standpoint about file sharing and that is the reason why your post was engaging to read. One suggestion I would like to make for your future posts is to provide few more images, so you can convey your messages easily to the audience. Overall, this post was informative and fun to read.

    Keep Blogging!

  2. Luke,
Interesting take on the topic. I like how you mostly talk about the topic itself, rather than picking an example and talking about it. Also, like Jay said, your emphasis on File Sharing makes the blog an interesting read.
    Good job!

  3. Hi Luke,

I had a lot of fun reading your blog post from this week about file sharing. It was very interesting, especially when you were talking about legal uses of file sharing.
I also use torrents a lot legally in my daily life. I see that you have a very wide view of this subject. Also, that Katawa Shoujo game that you linked is...uhh...kind of @#$!#ed up. I looked it up online since I didn't know what it was, and the premise sounds really horrible. Is it as tasteless as the plot synopsis makes it sound?

    Sincerely
    Tim K

    1. Thanks for the comment Tim, unfortunately I haven't played it, so I can't comment on it personally, but from what I've read about it online it's suppose to be a pretty decent game.

  4. So I'm going to go ahead and say up front that the whole reason I picked this post to comment on above others was the title. Yours currently says "File sharing: it is importance." Maybe that was intentional. Probably not. But uh...that's a thing.

I think yours is the only blog that mentioned the major benefit of torrents: they distribute the burden of hosting files so huge, expensive servers aren't necessary to share a file around. For weighty files like an Ubuntu install, that has to be a good thing.

One last point: this is supposed to be a professional (or at least professional-ish) blog. I'm not sure how well a link to a porn game will go over during grading. You make a fair point about it being distributed via file sharing, but...

    1. Thanks for the comment Katharine, I went ahead and fixed the title. As for the adult game, I think I'll leave it in as that was one of the most prominent example I could think of on how file sharing can be used in order to distribute a product cheaply.

  5. Hello Luke,

You made several good points on what file sharing is, some controversies about it, and its usefulness.
There are plentiful citations so that readers can find more information out if they wished to. It seems as though your post advocates that all torrents on utorrent are illegal to download while many of then are it does not mean all of them are. Nonetheless it was a good read and is well written.

  6. Hey, Good job with this post! It think you did a great job at explaining why file sharing is important and why it shouldn't be automatically associated with illegally distributing software or copyright material. The internet is such an amazing medium where we can communicate and share but also research contribute and participate in global projects. File Sharing is such an important part of the internet and many beneficial activities wouldn't be possible without the technology that makes file sharing possible.
