Computer Graphics: How you are helping out.

The above image is a figure I'm sure most of us are familiar with as we have to fill them out in sites to make accounts or post comments. And whenever I see one I get a little worked up as I know I'm probably going to fail entering the correct values on the first try for whatever reason. In any case it is a good system as it stops spammers from spamming webpages since computer software is currently not smart enough to be able to decipher the above image as text. And that's because of the nature of how text is written without any consistency due to text being spaced differently for any number of reasons. On the other hand, there is consistency in the letters you are reading right now since each letter is exactly the same as the previous version due to the way computer programs display the letters we type.

And to go further into what the above image is, it is "reCAPTCHA [which] is a free CAPTCHA service that helps to digitize books, newspapers and old time radio shows." (read more at: http://www.google.com/recaptcha/learnmore). And what this means is that by solving these CAPTCHAs you are helping out programs in their conversion process of images into text so that all books can be available online in the future so that we do not lose them as in the case of the burning of the Library of Alexandria in which a considerably amount of knowledge was lost due to a lack of additional copies of works.

  1. Hi Luke! Great summary about CAPTCHAs. My very first time encounter with CAPTCHAs was back in 2008. Well I might have used before that, but a friend of mine gave presentation about CAPTCHAs and that is how I learnt what really a CAPTCHA is. It is indeed a smart way to stop automated computer programs to register hundreds of accounts online and safe-guards applications.

  2. Hi Luke,

It is so nice to read about CAPTCHAs. I know we come across these every single day but hardly care about what these are or what they do. But it is good to know what is happening behind CAPTCHAs and their purpose. I am really amazed to know Mehal has used it in his presentation. I am definitely interested in learning more about it.

Overall, it is a great topic. I will see a CAPTCHA while submitting a comment now! Amazing isn't it!

  3. Hi Luke, Nice post about CAPTCHAs. Two weeks ago, I implemented reCAPTCHA for one of my web application project. It is very useful tools to distinguish between machine vs human user. It is also  used to block automated scripts from abusing its on line services. As a result , less pressure on your database. You did good job describing CAPTCHA and main purpose of use.

  4. Hi Luke,
Actually, every time I saw the little box, I feel unhappy. Why it shows again? Why I need to type the stupid words and numbers again? Just like you, I seldom type the corrected ones at the first time. usually, I will try several time to pass this step. From my feeling, I hate it. From your blog, I understand it is necessary to exist to protect our information. It is a good guy. I will check the website which you posted online to learn more about captcha.
